Chevrei Tikva marks 25 years

by Laura Munson

Cleveland-The Chevrei Tikva Chavurah of Fairmount Temple will host the Victor Karp Memorial LGBT Scholar in Residence in honor of their 25th anniversary, with services and programming for LGBT Jews, their families and friends.

The keynote speaker will be Rabbi J. B. Sacks, who lives with his partner, Steven Karash, and their son in Los Angeles, where he serves on the faculty of the Academy for the Jewish Religion. Rabbi Sacks was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary after graduating summa cum laude from Ohio University. He is working toward his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible at Claremont Graduate University and is active in Jews for Marriage Equality, which continues to work to overturn California's Proposition 8 in order to ensure equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians.

On Friday, April 24 at the 6:15 p.m. Shabbat service, Sacks will speak on "My Personal Journey as a Gay Rabbi and Father-Jewish Values and LGBT Inclusion." Service will be followed by a hot and hearty oneg, or social hour.

On Saturday, April 25 at 9:15 a.m., a Torah study and bagel brunch with Rabbi Sacks will explore "Why Leviticus Poses No Problem For Embracing and Empowering LGBT Jews." Following that at 10:30 a.m. will be the Shabbat morning minyan. The service will include the dedication of the new Torah Ark, designed by local designer Mort Epstein, to be shared by the Chevrei Tikva Chavurah and the minyan.

That night, the anniversary dinner and celebration will be held, at which Chevrei Tikva will present the Notein Or (Giver of Light) Awards to both the Jewish Community Federation and

Karen and Bob Gross, the founders of TransFamily. The evening will also include a 25-year historical photomontage, and entertainment by Gene's Jazz Hot with Peggi Cella. Reservations are required for the dinner ($40 each) by April 16 by calling Cathy Lipton at 216-464-1330, ext. 126.

On Sunday, April 26 at 11 a.m., Rabbi Sacks will lead a discussion on "How To Answer Your Children's Questions About Judaism and Sexuality-Are You an Askable Parent?"

This is a very timely discussion for parents to help them better respond to our children's and our grandchildren's questions, especially in light of what they may see in the media or hear from other children.

Rabbi J.B. Sacks

All events are at Fairmount Temple, 23737 Fairmount Blvd in Beachwood, and are open to the entire community. RSVPs are required only for the Saturday night dinner. ✓

Laura Munson is the communications director of Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple.
